在参与及尽责管理时，环境因素往往是一个行业的问题。以制造业为例，常见的环境问题有：排放污染物、废水及废弃处理不当、能源和资源过度消耗、使用有害化学物质等，因此，在参与时，往往是在整个行业中，推行采取可持续生产实践，包括节能减排、回收和再利用、使用环保材料、推行清洁生产技术以及加强环境管理和监控等。除了制造业外，能源行业、农业和畜牧业、制药行业等，也存在许多行业内的环境问题，在参与时，往往是想要解决这一行业内所有企业所面临的某一项环境问题。

而治理问题，通常是受到国家监管的，每个国家的国情不同，传统不同，公司治理会有很大不同。因此，在参与时，更有可能按照区域划分。
